When these talented ladies had their first album release, it was late. The song At Night I Praycame out with the video shown in some stores, but the only thing on the market was a soundtrack for a movie called "Wild Orchid". What were they thinking? The video appeared and record stores didn't know a hill of beans about it. Someone was really sitting back and lost precious marketing time when this song was out.
Radio airplay got ditched because the marketing & cd sales & the record producer, Mr. "X" really dropped the dozen eggs and slipped out the door doing what I don't know.
Going fast forward, there was a concert series for Cher which had these very talented girls headlining the show. (SHORELINE AMPITHEATRE MOUNTAIN VIEW CA) They were early for the show like everyone else. Cyndi Lauper was "on something" or "was very tired" - Since I heard her sing Id say Cyndi Lauper was on something and this talentless weirdo, like the dead lady Winehouse - no sympathy, you do that much, you're gonna die and why listen to a musician on that much drugs?
Moral of the story, lots of fans to see Wild Orchid sing were still arriving and being PARKED. Show staff was freakling out, some were apparently in the mind to have Cyndi thrown on a taxi and yanked off the concert series. So, the decision is made to have Wild Orchid Start before the seats are filling, a half seatedvenue while folks are getting eats or bgoing to the bathroom-you wait until the parking staff says all the cars are in, the ticket gate says the crowd is paper thin, THEN you start the damn show. Shoreline is outside, so it's a night concert spot, and if it's dusk people on the grass cant see the stage, and others can't see the display monitors.
I can only assume some nitwit for Cyndi Lauper started filling her whack-job guy full of coffee, while Wild Orchid is doing numbers as best they could. What I hear is Wild Orchid had more songs, as Cher's crew was in setup and readiness and Cher was coming out at least way later, when it was DARK. Lighted stage, light show, so they trimmed Wild Orchid's act, pushed Cyndi Lauper onstage and Cyndi Lauper sang most of her songs like someone reduced the speed, "Time after Time", a pretty cool song back in the day was so bad I saw some of Cher's band musicians really making a good joke of it and having a good laugh, looking at me like "WHAAAT?". One of Cher's roadies said "What the F..K" is Cyndi Lauper doing on now? That started Cher's crew getting into confusion about the schedule.
You see a lot of activity as armed security way in back of a stage area where if there are people who are in a bad scene get bawled out but this whole Cyndi Lauper thing was pretty damn pukey. Usually studio musicians are the friendliest people, pros, but Cyndi Lauper really made that concert a disaster and the crowd wasnt impressed with her either. She had her day, but like a lot of others, the music gets stale and when you have a misfit whack-job like Cyndi Lauper get into a prima-donna mode that she can be irresponsible to the point her yes-men crew kiss her behind, it's time to put her into pasture.
Wild Orchid & Cher would have been a great show, and you could have had fans for both have a good show. Concert work in stage production is a really crazy and fruitcake job, people in the music business are the worst of the food chain, like Chris Brown, beat up your girlfriend and act like OJ you wanna talk about golf or your new album-what a whack-job. Chris Brown can't even play a guitar or an accordion. They should have sent that idiot to jail for a hard lesson.
Hopefully the Internet will put these big record labels out of business. Musicians have been held captive and slaves to people who make da mo' money while girls like Wild Orchid had the chemistry and were the Stradivarius violin but the Mr. "x" who was in charge of the album getting promotion and pre-sales and on-time cd's on the shelf was a real dumbass. These girls of Wild Orchid had a new sound, original, something I lked jamming to for guitar solos. At least the three original girls had 2 really good cd's which BOTH had good songs throughout.
I think they all should kiss and make up, life is too short for such three pretty talented singers to part ways, but they are young enough to be my daughters, and my daughter doesnt listen to me either..
